Abstract
Paintbrush tuff from the Nevada Test Site was subjected to high strain rates using a split-Hopkinson pressure bar. Confined competent and granular specimens were dynamically loaded to 600 MPa and 4000 s−1. For the dry competent tuff the modulus increased from 1.0 to 4.0 GPa as the voids collapse. Water added to the granular tuff reduced the intergrain forces.
