Reliability and Robustness in Real-Time Control Applications

This paper presents the engineering procedures that can be developed to minimize flooding when failures occur. Specifically, we will review: the design of control sites; the redundancy in monitoring; efficient communication; specifications and adapted equipment for the application; the data validation process, degraded control modes and alarm management. Through some analysis and recent realizations, examples will be given to illustrate how these procedures can be implemented and how they impact on the robustness of the control scheme.
