•Anisakis simplex can elicit allergic responses in consumers of fish products.•Allergenic A. simplex proteins were determined with sera from sensitised patients.•Potential novel allergens were characterised by targeted proteomic analysis.•A. simplex allergens possibly cross-react with known invertebrate allergens.
