Abstract
Summary. In this study the anti-helicobacter activity of different fractions obtained from the hydroalcoholic extract of Ruta graveolens (RGHE) was investigated. In addition, a detailed phytochemical study of the active extract was carried out to isolate and elucidate the bioactive compounds. RGHE has a potent anti-helicobacter activity with zone of inhibition ≥ 22 mm and MIC ≤ 5 mg/ml. Chromatographic study of the active dichloromethane extract was afforded to isolate 3 (2, 2dimethyl butenyl) 3′- hydroxy dihydrofuropsoralen and Arborinine alkaloid. These compounds proved to have potent anti-helicobacter activity (MIC ≤ 2 mg/ml). Industrial relevance. Arborinine alkaloid and dihydrofuropsoralen derivative are responsible for the anti-helicobacter activity which would correlate with the known antibacterial activity of Ruta graveolens , which can provide a cheap alternative drug. Keywords . Arborinine; anti-helicobacter; Ruta graveolens L.; antimicrobial activity.
