Abstract
Introduction: The following are considered risk factors for chronic infections such as rhinitis and sinusitis, socioeconomic conditions, passive smoking and breastfeeding. Knowledge of these factors and their possible correlations are needed to reduce the morbidity of respiratory infections in children. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation of bruxism with other risk factors for respiratory infections in children. Methods: Sixty-two children from a public nursery school were evaluated through a questionnaire applied to parents with issues regarding living conditions, duration of breastfeeding, passive smoking, type and frequency of respiratory infections in the last twelve months and diagnosis of bruxism. Results: The Bruxism was present in 55% of children with chronic respiratory diseases such as rhinitis and sinusitis (p = 0.04) and the prevalence of infections in the past twelve months occurred in 90% of children diagnosed with rhinitis and sinusitis. (P = 0.05). Conclusion: Bruxism and chronic infections of the upper airway shows a positive correlation with Respiratory infections in children of school age.
