Can One Speak About Tunneling Times In Polite Society?

A brief and partial review of the tunneling time issue, as it was debated in the late 1980s, is given. The review will be strongly biased, stressing the point of view taken by the author. Although later theoretical developments are not covered, a few pointers to the recent experiments on photonic tunneling will be given. The emphasis will be on matters of interpretation and internal consistency. It is argued that the question of local tunneling times, as commonly understood, has no answer. Instead of continuing a debate on objects of dubious experimental relevance, one should instead focus on understanding existing experiments and, if possible, make predictions on feasible new ones.
