Abstract
Introduction and objectives: The Working Group on Valve Repair of the Spanish Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery presents the second annual report on reconstructive valve surgery of the mitral, aortic and tricuspid valves. This year the aim is to describe national experience on mitral valve repair and determining mortality rates. Methods: Data were collected through an on-line questionnaire. Participation was voluntary. The number of valve operations (valve repairs and replacements) were registered. Etiology of mitral valve disease was detailed and its relationship to the surgical volume from each centre was analysed. In-hospital mortality was reported. Comparative data with the experience of previous years in valve surgery were also reported. Results: Data from 34 centres representing around 80% of the surgical activity all over the country were reported. The number of valve operation procedures increased by 4% increase compared with that of the year 2011. The number of valve repair procedures increased by 5% despite a slight decrease in valve interventions compared to 2011. A slight increase in aortic and mitral valve repair/replacement ratio was observed. More than half (58%) of the repaired mitral valves were degenerative, followed by ischemic functional (21%) and non-ischemic functional mitral regurgitation (11%). No correlation was found between surgical volume and rate of mitral valve repair. In-hospital mortality was 1.1%, 3.3% and 4.7% in degenerative, rheumatic and ischemic mitral regurgitation, respectively. Conclusions: The percentage of patients who benefit from mitral valve repair is increasing. The observed-in-hospital mortality in the reported experience on mitral valve repair was excellent. (C) 2014 Sociedad Espanola de Cirugia Toracica-Cardiovascular. Published by Elsevier Espana, S.L.U.
