Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the microbiological quality of thermal and nonthermal swimming pool water of sport club from Botucatu-SP, Brazil. Twenty-six samples of water were collected from 13 samples thermal and 13 non-thermal swimming pools. Samples were evaluated for the probable number of total and fecal coliforms, by multiple tube fermentation technique. From 100% water samples of thermal and 38.5% of non-thermal swimming pools the contamination by total coliforms was verified. In 54% and 15.4% samples obtained from thermal and non-thermal swimming pools, respectively, the contamination by fecal coliforms was confirmed. Enterobacteria, Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. were isolated from samples. These results reinforce that a constant sanitary monitoring of the recreational water to control the contamination levels is needed, especially in tropical countries, in order to protect public health.
