Abstract
We present the period distribution of Cepheids in the LMC based on MACHO data. We construct simple population synthesis models to interpret this distribution and derive constraints on evolutionary models. An increase of star formation about 100 Myr ago is necessary to explain the observed distribution. Short period Cepheids are not reproduced by evolution models. We propose that they are the "metal-rich" equivalent of anomalous Cepheids seen in dwarf spheroidal galaxies.
