Abstract
The Road Condition Indicator (RCI) was developed to gather data provided by traffic-speed SCANNER surveys. The RCI could be used as an indicator of pavement conditions and as a tool by those responsible for maintenance and planning decisions. However, the RCI is not ideally suited to actually planning and prioritizing maintenance needs. Engineers have called for a broader set of applications which could provide more guidance about whether a site needs further investigation or maintenance and more specifically, what kind of maintenance. A method was developed which considers five intermediate indicators for assessing pavement deterioration. Further refinement will combine 3 of the indicators to provide a more accurate maintenance condition indicator. Various approaches for displaying data have been proposed which include symbolic displays and combinations of colors and symbols.
