"Broadening the Foci of Employee Engagement: Definitions, Antecedents, and Outcomes"

Employee engagement is frequently defined as ‘work engagement’ focusing on how engaged an individual employee is with his or her job. This symposium brings together six papers that argue that, although work engagement is important, there are other types of employee engagement which are less widely research, including organization, team, and stakeholder engagement. Antecedents and outcomes of such constructs are explored. Additionally, much of the research on employee engagement to date has been largely described from a universal perspective – less attention has been paid to the country context in which data have been collected. Definitions, antecedents and consequences of engagement may however vary across cultural contexts. This symposium brings together studies of employee engagement from a range of cultural contexts: the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, and China.
