Abstract
The causes of diffuse hair loss remain mostly unknown, as the symptoms manifest themselves several months after the injury (Zaun 1978). Factors influencing the physiological course of the hair cycle, or inhibiting the matrix cells and, therefore, the growth of hair are thought to be restonsible for this type of hair loss. Beside some chronic diseases such as colitis ulcerosa, carcinoma, tuberculosis, malnutrition, starvation, weight loss (Munro 1971), low iron level, the malfunction of the thyroid or pituitary glands may cause hair loss. Chronic infections, hepatopathy, metabolic diseases as well as some drugs or environmental factors (metals, pesticides) may also lead to diffuse effluvium (Zaun 1978).
