•Highly graphitic nanosheets were formed on the Enteromorpha-based catalysts.•Both the intrinsic N/Fe in Enteromorpha were co-doped onto the catalysts.•Graphitic N in different catalysts showed the high correlation with PCM removal rate.•PCM degradation was dominated by the radical O2− and non-radical 1O2.
