Building high-coverage monolayers of covalently bound magnetic nanoparticles

•A method for forming a layer of covalently bound nanoparticles is offered.•A nearly perfect monolayer of covalently bound magnetic nanoparticles was formed on gold.•Spectroscopic techniques confirmed covalent binding by the “click” reaction.•The influence of the functionalization scheme on surface coverage was investigated.
