Lipid profile disorder in HIV infected patients treated with lopinavir/ritonavir and its relation with adherence To treatment

Objective: To evaluate the correlation of the lopinavir/ritonavir induced dyslipidemia (LPV/r) with adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) during the first 12 months of treatment. Method: An observational and retrospective study. We selected HIV patients who initiated ART with LPV/r. The main variables of the study were: total levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, before and during treatment with LPV/r and adherence to therapy (>= 95% or <95%). Results: We included 41 patients. During the treatment with LPV/r, lipid levels increased significantly (p <0.05). We observed significantly higher levels of cholesterol in patients with more adherence during the first months of treatment. No significant differences were found in the lipid increase between both groups of adhesion. Conclusion: Although we observed a trend toward a higher increase in lipid levels in patients with >= 95% adherence, the obtained outcomes do not allow to conclude that lipid disorder associated to LPV/r therapy is related to adherence.
