Abstract
This research is comparing efficiency of xylose fractionation from Jathopha curcas Linnaeus. branch between pre-hydrolysis+steam explosion processes and steam explosion + post-hydrolysis processes. Jathopha curcas Linnaeus. branch consist of cellulose 41.25% pentosan 30.59% lignin 26.98% and ethanol/benzene extractive 1.68% based on 100 g. dry weight. The result of pre hydrolysis (soaking with sulfuric acid 1% w/v) in 1 day and steam explosion at 200 degrees C in 1 minute had the maximum xylose 6.82% and had the efficiency's xylose fractional 29.23% of the total xylose in Jathopha curcas Linnaeus. branch. For the steam explosion at 200 degrees C in 3 minute and post hydrolysis (3% sulfuric acid w/v) at 121 degrees C in 45 minute gave the maximum xylose at 6.33% and had the efficiency's xylose fractional 27.13% of the total xylose in Jathopha curcas Linnaeus. branch. The results of this study are the best of efficiency of xylose fractionation from Jathopha curcas Linnaeus. branch between two process are not different. (27.13-29.23% of the total xylose in Jathopha curcas Linnaeus. branch.) But pre-hydrolysis + steam explosion processes are none complicated and faster than steam explosion + post-hydrolysis processes. Therefore pre-hydrolysis + steam explosion processes condition for preparing xylose to produce xylitol.
