Abstract
In order to determine the relationship between hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatitis B and C, serological findings, prognostic factors of the tumor, and histological changes in hepatic parenchyma were investigated in 56 patients undergoing resectin for HCC. There were 60 men and 6 women, with a mean age of 56.2 years. HBs antigen was positive in 19.6% (11/56) and HCV antibody was positive in 80% (20/25). HBs antigen positive patients (mean age of 50.6 years) were significantly younger than HBs antigen negative patients (mean of 59.0). Chronic hepatitis (CH) was present in 3 and liver cirrhosis (LC) was present in 7 out of 11 cases of HBs antigen positive HCC. CH was present in 1 and LC was present in 41 out of 45 cases of HBs antigen negative HCC. among 45 cases of HBs antigen negative HCC, 17 cases were HCV antibody positive which were of LC. Accordingly, LC was frequently found in HBs antigen negative cases, especially those with HCV antibody positive HCC, with a significant difference. On the other hand CH was significantly common in HBs antigen positive cases. The presence or absence of HBs antigen or HCV antibody had no relation with the histologic prognostic factor of the tumor.
