Abstract
Distal Radius Fracture - Unrecognized First Sign of Osteoporosis? The distal radius fracture is the most often seen fracture in an orthopaedic out-patient department. Treated either conservatively or surgically, doctors have to be aware of any fragility fracture in patients older than 50 years. As orthogeriatric fractures will tremendously increase in number in the future, the only chance to limitate further rising costs due to the increasing older population with an increasing number of fractures will be awareness concerning referral to diagnostics and therapy of middle-aged patients with fractures suspicious to low-energy fragility fractures. Even the possibilities of the necessity of a fracture liaison service will be discussed. We as orthopaedic trauma surgeons have the task to not miss this given "window of opportunity".
