摘要
Atrial fibrillation is common after coronary artery bypass graft and is associated with increased risk of complications, costs, and hospital lengths of stay. It may also be related to oxidative stress; therefore, ascorbic acid supplementation has been proposed as potential prophylaxis for postoperative atrial fibrillation. A literature review revealed 7 studies that might support supplementation in patients after coronary artery bypass graft; however, further research is needed. Considering increased ascorbate requirements in surgical patients, risk of suboptimal intake postoperatively, and low risk along with many potential benefits of supplementation, clinicians should consider prescribing 500 mg per day of ascorbic acid in the postoperative period after coronary artery bypass graft.
