Corrosion of metal and metal alloy containers in contact with phase change materials (PCM) for potential heating and cooling applications

•The corrosion of different metals in contact with salt hydrates PCM is evaluated.•Salt hydrates PCM for heating and cooling applications are studied.•Stainless steel is the metal recommended when in contact with all the PCM analysed.•Carbon steel presented high corrosion in contact with the PCM for cooling applications.•Copper must be avoided when using the PCM for heating applications.
