Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Lethal fetal anomalies are rarely diagnosed in the third trimester among women in the United States. Furthermore, it is unknown how many patients or providers are involved in this scope of care. Guidelines and protocols to inform management are not widely published in the scientific literature. METHODS: A national survey of United States abortion providers was electronically conducted to determine their involvement with third trimester terminations. Information regarding demographics, patient encounters, and education were analyzed for trends and associations. RESULTS: Response rate was 46%, 245 persons were queried with 112 responses. 19% of respondents participate in the care of women undergoing third trimester termination. Among physicians who provide these services: they were more likely to have met a woman who was unable to access a third trimester termination, expressed a desire to learn and engaged in patient care during fellowship, trained on the West coast, and identified as a faculty member at an academic Family Planning Fellowship program (P
