Joining Behavior of YSZ Ceramics to Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 -SiO 2 -R 2 O and Al 2 O 2 -ZrO 2 -SiO 2 -La 2 O 3 -R 2 O Glass Systems

The joining behavior of YSZ ceramics to the glasses used in the 9Al(2)O(3)-24ZrO(2)-51SiO(2)-16R(2)O and 9Al(2)O(3)-24ZrO(2)-51SiO(2)7La(2)O(3)- 9R(2)O (wt%) glass systems was investigated. The glass transition and softening temperatures were determined to be 430 degrees C and 760 degrees C, respectively. The behavior of the contact angle was inversely proportional to an increase in the temperature. The Zr element in YSZ acted as a nucleation agent and contributed to the bonding behavior at the interface.
