Identifying management strategies to improve sustainability and household income for herders on the desert steppe in Inner Mongolia, China

•Two management strategies were simulated based on the energy balance.•The economic results were verified by the demonstration and simulation farm.•Increasing net income is possible by reducing stocking rate with new strategies.•The new strategies can reduce the methane emission in household ranch level.•New strategies have implications in control pasture degeneration and climate change.
