•Models on the propagation of microstructural short cracks under cyclic loading conditions are reviewed and compared.•The mechanisms of interaction of small cracks with obstacles such as grain boundaries or phase boundaries are described.•The application of small crack propagation models to fatigue life prediction is shown.•2-Dimensional and 3-dimensional model approaches are compared and critically discussed.
