Towards an Integrated Design of Ranked Order and Median Filter for 2-D Images

Two elegant algorithms for median filtering and rank order filtering of 2-D images are presented here. A modified approach to compute the median of medians yields a robust hardware for image filtering. An entirely new algorithm for generalised rank order filtering for image processing utilising triangulation approach has been proposed. Both the algorithms have been successfully tested on 2-D image. The ASIC processors for both the algorithms have been designed using CAD tool ORCAD and hardware simulation results are presented. Interfaces of the filtering hardware with a host system along with an approach towards an integrated chip design have been suggested.
