•Retrospective analysis of 100 surgically treated paediatric burns.•32% of patients suffered complications (delayed healing, adverse scarring or contractures).•All complications occurred within 18 months of injury.•Outreach is a feasible way of following up these patients closer to home.•Reducing patient distance travelled by 50% and reducing cost to service by 50%.
