A validation study of scar vascularity and pigmentation assessment using dermoscopy

•We used dermoscopy to assess vascularity and pigmentation of hypertrophic scars.•Dermoscopy is more accurate and reliable than traditional assessment tools.•The validity of dermoscopy as an outcome measurement tool is good.•Dermoscopy has high inter-rater and test–retest reliability.•Dermoscopy is a portable and cost-effective measurement tool for scar assessments.
