•A field study of glazed and unglazed balcony temperature conditions was conducted.•The IDA-ICE 4.61 programme is suitable for highly glazed space simulations.•The use of software's climate model and detailed window structure is recommended.•Wrong input parameter can cause more inaccuracy than choice of modelling method.•Solar absorption, airtightness and supply air solution are critical to the results.
