Schistosoma haematobium egg-induced bladder urothelial abnormalities dependent on p53 are modulated by host sex

•Bladder urothelial ulceration may be precancerous in urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS).•p53 defects have been found in schistosomal and non-schistosomal bladder cancers.•Women may have poorer early oncologic outcomes from bladder cancer.•p53 haploinsufficiency drives urothelial ulceration in female mice with UGS.•p53 defects and host sex may interact to determine UGS bladder cancer outcomes.
