•Cu2+/(Cu2++Cu+) ratio is well correlated with dibenzothiophene (DBT) conversion.•DBT oxidation and adsorption are coupled in the oxidative desulfurization process.•Low pH value favored significantly the DBT oxidation.•Acetic acid promoted DBT oxidation in acidic condition.
