Acute Appendix: A Wide Spectrum of Findings on Ultrasound

To illustrate a wide spectrum of findings in acute appendicitis. 110 cases of acute appendicitis picked up on ultrasound and subsequently confirmed or followed have been put together and illustrated. This study has been done over a period of 5 years. Studies were done on Philips iU22 and HDI 5000 machines using various probes including abdominal convex, linear high frequency, transvaginal probe, etc. Besides the traditional acute appendicitis, we demonstrate several atypical and complicated cases of appendicitis such as appendicitis caused by parasites, secondary to neoplasm; unusual locations of appendicitis (perihepatic, deep pelvic) and various complications, e.g. Perforation, gangrenous appendicitis, mucocele, etc. Ultrasound is not only accurate in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis but can also show interesting findings
