Price, quality and trade costs in the food sector

•We estimate quality from trade data at the country–product level in the food sector.•The estimated quality and the price of the exported goods are imperfectly correlated.•We test the relationship between price vs. quality and trade costs.•Higher ad valorem tariffs are associated to the export of lower quality products.•Specific tariffs lead to export higher price products, but do not significantly impact quality.
