SOUND AND VIBRATION CONSIDERATIONS OF SOME MATERIALS FOR AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS

Vibration and noise amelioration in and across seve ral components and modules of the automotive, such as the panels, doors, engine covers, seats and others, is extremely important. NVH performance has been recognized as a critical factor in the pur chase decisions of many buyers. This study examines the vibro-acoustic characteristics of some monolith ic and composite materials and some generally periodic material structures. By experimental and n umerical/empirical methods, it explores some opportunities for minimizing the transmission of no ise and vibration. Some new constructions not hitherto probed for vibro-acoustic fitness are exam ined. Results from this study are expected to contribute towards design inputs to obtain better p erformances.
