Variability of the martian seasonal CO 2 cap extent over eight Mars Years

•The edges of the CO2 seasonal caps are tracked from Mars Year 24 to 31.•During non-dusty years, cap edges exhibit relatively high repeatability.•Edges near cryptic terrains show high seasonal and inter-annual variability.•Two global dust storms have accelerated the retreat of the North and South caps.
