Abstract

•Columnar material of the ice I–MS11 eutectic system was prepared in the laboratory.•Basic mechanical properties were examined and compared with those of freshwater ice.•Results indicate the I–MS11 eutectic material is generally similar to freshwater ice.•Modeling the evolution of Europa using properties of freshwater ice appears reasonable.
