Abstract
•Loss of cooling leads to a rapid increase of column pressure.•Low boilers draining from the internals may lead to a pressure rise in the column.•Process dynamics is governed by fast dumping of liquid from trays.•A sieve tray weeping model is adapted to plant data for a valve tray column.•Relief rates can be reduced or eliminated with a shutdown system closing all energy inputs.
