Tree neighbourhood matters – Tree species composition drives diversity–productivity patterns in a near-natural beech forest

•We test tree diversity–productivity relationships in a temperate beech forest.•Beech and hornbeam trees grew faster in more diverse neighbourhoods.•Complementarity effects were driven by differences in species’ competitive strengths.•Small scale admixture with patches of different species promotes tree growth.
