•We simulated the heat transfer in stainless steel melt under ultrasonic treatment.•The effect of ultrasonic power on temperature field is demonstrated.•The relationship between solidification microstructure and treating power is discussed.•We proposed a new method to introduce ultrasound from the melt bottom.
