•Rosuvastatin was tested in unchallenged and LPS-challenged pure microglia.•It inhibited proliferation and cell adhesion in control microglia.•It inhibited IL-1β, TNF-α synthesis and other pro-inflammatory genes in LPS-treated cells.•It elevated IL-10 production and the expression of other anti-inflammatory genes in both groups.•Rosuvastatin’s effects are beneficial during neuroinflammation.
