Abstract
•Sevoflurane postconditioning protects against hypoxia-ischemia brain damage in rats.•Postconditioning significantly improved long-term cognitive performance of the rats.•Postconditioning increased the number of surviving hippocampal neurons.•The effects of sevoflurane are via PI3K/Akt/eNOS and PI3K/Akt/GSK-3β pathways.•Blockage of mPTP opening may be involved in attenuation of histomorphological injury.
