•Hyperglycemia after kidney transplantation was associated with old age, high body mass index and female gender.•Hyperglycemia after kidney transplantation occurred and resolved in a considerable number of patients.•Transient elevation of glucose could not increase development of new onset diabetes after transplantation and cardiovascular disease.
