•Retrospective follow-up study was performed on acute nonA–nonB hepatitis.•Increase of autochthonous hepatitis E acute infections during 1978–1991 was shown.•Data strengthen the observation of the increase of zoonotic HEV in western countries.•It is important to include HEV testing in diagnostic algorithms of acute hepatitis.
