•Developed effective solvents by adding DMF into [C4mim][CH3COO].•The solvents can readily dissolve cellulose at room temperatures.•Prompted cellulose dissolution results from the dissociation of [C4mim][CH3COO].•Macromolecular chain of regenerated cellulose is hardly broken.
