•BRCA-deficient cells are sensitive to H2O2 induced oxidative DNA damage.•Oxidative DNA damage results in the accumulation of DNA double-strand breaks during S-phase.•Increased chromosomal breaks are triggered by oxidative stress in BRCA-deficient cells.•Genetic instability in BRCA-deficient cells is increased in tissues subjected to oxidative stress.
