Has Proteomics come of age in India?

The perspective highlights the growth of Proteomics in India, in particular over the last twelve years. It brings to fore the areas in which Proteomics is used to address a spectrum of biological queries in academia and industry. The contributions from India and its participation in the HUPO initiatives are receiving worldwide attention. India has representatives on the councils of the international Proteomics organizations. There are major programs for promoting Proteomics among the students, teachers and new researchers. The increasing financial and infrastructure support from the government to biotechnology as a whole is likely to enhance Proteomics research in the country. The overview shows that Proteomics has come of age in India and its future is definitely very promising. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Proteomics in India.This perspective brings to attention the increasing use of proteomics in India in a variety of biological queries from academia and industry. It also highlights the increase in publications, attention of this work worldwide and acknowledgement that India has the expertise and infrastructure for using and promoting proteomics research in the country and to participate in global initiatives. The future of proteomics research in India is very promising.
