The first human infection with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus in Shaanxi Province, China.

•We report the first human case of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) occurring in Shaanxi Province, Western China.•Our study indicates significant levels of SFTS virus antibodies among healthy humans.•Other infections in the village may have resulted from natural exposure.
