Abstract

•The human superior hypogastric plexus and hypogastric nerves were immunohistochemically analysed.•These neural structures contain sympathetic nerve fibres and most likely postganglionic parasympathetic nerve fibres.•Nerve damage during peri-aortic surgery may result in both sympathetic and parasympathetic dysfunction of pelvic organs.
