Disturbances in production of progesterone and their implications in plant studies.

•Inhibitors (mifepristone and trilostane) reduced progesterone content in wheat.•Inhibitors lowered the activity of Rubisco enzyme in drought stressed wheat.•Trilostane-treated plants were rescued by treatment with exogenous progesterone.•The inhibitors modulated the development of winter wheat.•Model of steroid-regulated development of winter wheat was proposed.
