An effective storage function model for an urban watershed in terms of hydrograph reproducibility and Akaike information criterion

•Selected different existing storage function models and modified their framework.•This modification avoided the need for effective rainfall and baseflow separation.•Conducted performance evaluation of models in terms of hydrograph reproducibility.•Used Akaike Information Criterion for the effective urban runoff model selection.•Urban storage function model was found to be most effective for urban watersheds.
