Flattening mountains: Micro-fabrication of planar replicas for bullet lateral striae analysis

•We provided a planar sample containing all the three dimensional details.•We fabricated sub-micrometer quality replica of the bullet lateral striae.•We have characterized the whole striae sequences both in term of their topography.•We have applied our technique both to integer and deformed projectiles.•Novel samples are suitable for innovative analysis methods.
